A DYCKES BY ANY OTHER NAME. . . .

As we all know so well, the letter c is hard to hold onto. Secretaries and people at the other end of a telephone line can't seem to grasp it. Even our friends misspell us at least half the time. Our own handwriting may turn Dyckes into Dyches or Dycks. And the c was under considerably stronger attack in the past, when spelling was considered an unnecessary luxury. In short, it's a miracle that there are any of us left.

Among the questions are: Did others have their c shorn or stolen or misplaced along the way? Were we van Dyckes who were vandalized? Or did some ancient ancestor add the c to an existing name in order to stand out from the crowd? Or was it just one more spelling mistake?
