Janes Dyckes, Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1850 (#317) Misspelling of James? Correct spelling of Dyckes? (Which is more unlikely?)
LOUISIANA
The Fish Manuscript makes many references to a family variously named Dyckes, Dyches, and Dykes. The interesting thing is that the only instances of Dyckes come in the copies of documents that were signed by Josiah Dyckes and his wife, Lucinda [Lewis?].
Josiah had six hundred and forty acres of land lying on the east side of Tanchipaho, which he settled in August 1806. Josiah and Lucinda may have come from SC, where they married around 1799. The 1830 Louisiana census of Washington Parish also listed Samuel Dykes, William Dykes, William Dykes, and Joseph Dykes. If this last is Joseph Josiah Dyckes, then he is the son of Josiah and the brother of Nancy Ann Dyckes.
Nancy "Ann" Dyches, daughter of Josiah and Lucinda, was married Joseph Martin Fish (the subject of the manuscript) in the St. Tammany Parish.

Chancery Papers, 1835/04/08, mention John Dyckes, Joseph Dyckes, Ellen Dyckes, Joseph Dyckes, Jr., Mary Dyckes, Alice Dyckes, William Dyckes, and Sarah Dyckes. The John Dyckes of 1835 could not have been the John Dyckes of Ohio.
NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA
Some of the Dyckes/Dykes in Virginia and Tennessee also lived in North Carolina at times.
From information about the Collins Family of Orangeburgh , "Seems to have come from the Rutherford-Lincoln-Rowan Co. NC area. Same for Odom, Dyckes, Toney."
Janette Dyche Fitch, author of the multi-volume Dyche Families of America reports that the volume on the Dyches of Orangeburg, South Carolina has an index of 1,017 names.
George Dyches, was b. ca. 1730 in SC. His son was Isaac Dyches, who was born about 1807 (?) in Barnwell County SC. Isaac married Ann Sterling. One of their sons was named Aultman. (If Isaac was born in 1807, his father would have been around 67. Seems unlikely. If Hanfordsee nextwas his son, the date may be a typo. 1777?)
Hanford D. Dyches was born in 1816. In 1837, he married Elizabeth Lee of Barbour Co., AL. Hanford's children were named J. Willson, Barbara, Josiah, Aultman, and Mary Ann. Hanford died in Leesburg, FL, in 1886. Possibly the brother or son of Isaac Dyches.

OHIO
Henry Dyckes served as a Private in Company A of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He was mustered in September 8, 1862, at Camp Cleveland, Ohio, by A.S. Burt, 1st Lieutenant 18th Infantry, U.S.A. Mustered out June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, N.C., by E.A. Folsom, Captain and A.C.M.
Kevin Dyckes wrote me that Helen had written that "John and Eliza had a son named Henry, but the dates would indicate that this is definitely not Henry George. I did however find a Civil War muster roll that listed Henry Dyckes enlisted 5 Aug 1862 at 21 yrs old in Cleveland OH and served in SC."
He also wrote "I found a listing for Eliza Dyckes on the internet in the Cuyahoga County (Cleveland's county) Probate death records. She died 3 May 1889 age 76 yrs. Helen Dyckes had listed Eliza Newberry as being the wife of John Dyckes, married in Cleveland. These dates seem like a match."
If Henry was born around 1841, he could not be either of the Henrys in the following list.
Alexander Dyckes was listed in the1880 CensusPIKE COUNTY OHIO MARRIAGE RECORDS, 1815-1850

TENNESSEE
In his book Dropped Stitches in Tennessee, John Allison cites the Widow Dyckes as a character of Tennessee's early history. She was also known as "The Widder Dyches."
Rebeckah Dyckes is on a list of Shiloh Baptist Church Members , Roane county, Tennessee, 1822-1866.
Loften Dyckes was listed in the 1840 Census as living in Anderson County At that time, his household included one male 5-10 and another 30-40, and one female under five years of age.
From William Dykes Sr. of Hawkins County Tennessee by Linda Boyd Lawhon, 1998:
William Dykes was born between 1740 and 1750, and died around 1832 in Hawkins County, TN. He was married to Susannah Lankford. He appears to have lived in Surry and Sullivan Counties in North Carolina, Hawkins County, TN. He is also reported to have lived "on Beach Creek, Hawkins County, Tennessee." Although he was born in Virginia, it is unlikely that he was one of those listed in the John Dyckes Virginia family.
As if all this were not complicated enough, it is reported that some of the descendants of Johann Heinrich Deck of Rockingham County, Virginia used the spellings Dyche and Dyke when they lived in Greene County, Tennessee.
William and his wife were listed in the census of 1830 as being in the 80-90 age group.

Information from The Fish Manuscript
VIRGINIA and WEST VIRGINIA
(West Virginia did not become a separate state until 1863.)
A document called Louisa County Quakers mentions several people named Dyckes. Many Quakers moved into Caroline, Hanover, Spottsylvania, and Louisa counties around 1739. Religious harrassment drove some of them to other areas, notably southwestern Virginia and North Carolina.
John Haley, Sr., was one of the leaders. Three of his daughters married sons of John and Judith Lewis Dyches. James Dyches and Tabitha Haley moved to Fayette County, Kentucky. Henry Dyches and Delila (Delany) Haley also moved to KY. Will Dyches and Sarah Haley may also have moved there too.
It appears that John Dyckes, Jr. was drafted into the Continental Army several times, beginning in 1778, and served under General LaFayette and possibly Washington.
Property records of Fork Creek in Louisa County mention John Dyckes (also spelled Dykes in some of the records), who bought land from Francis Clark. John married Judith Lewis, and "several of their children married children of John Haley, Jr. and moved to Kentucky."
Dorothy Ford Wulfeck's book Virginia Marriages lists the marriages of these people, named either Dyckes or Dyches:
Elizabeth Dyckes and John Barker [no date given]
James Dyckes and Tabitha Haley, 8 Nov., 1773
Will[iam?] Dyckes and Sarah Haley, 28 Sept., 1778
Judith Lewis Dyckes and Benjamin Haley, [m. on 17 Feb. 1779?]
Henry Dyckes and Delaney (or Delia) Haley, 10 Jan., 1799
John, William, and Peggy Dyckes were witnesses to the will of Benjamin Haley, who died around 1837.
Joseph Dyckes (see Illinois) was born in Virginia in 1814.
Nancy Boswell Swam reports that Delia Dyche married Joseph J. Boswell (b.1847) in 1872 in Greenbrier Co, but then moved back to Louisa County before their daughter Maud was born in 1878. (Dates make it impossible for this to be the same Delia as above.)

Henry Dyckes (Dikes, Dykes, Dyks on different documents, although he was illiterate and could not sign his name) lived in Prince Edward County, VA. He also lived in TN and appears to have been a relative (brother?) of William Dykes of Hawkins Creek. The 1796 Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia Personal Property Tax List lists Jessey Dyckes (same as Jesse?)
Sarah Dyche was born 1831 (?) and died 1930 (?) in West Virginia. She was married to Cyrus Rains in Greenbriar, WV in 1851.
